The artistic story of
Carlo Zinelli (San Giovanni Lupatoto, Verona, 1916 – Chievo 1974) is a wholly Italian story, matured in mental wards and in the welcoming climate of a pioneering and innovative studio where great work takes shape, which encounters the gaze of Jean Dubuffet in the early sixties. Ten years after his definitive admission to the mental hospital in Verona, betrayed by life Carlo entrusts himself to art and creates a labyrinthine and visionary universe: from the signs traced out on the hospital walls to the many paintings on paper, uniforms and weapons of an ancient war (alpine troops, muskets, guns) are superimposed on white coats and syringes, on the daily struggle against illness.
Carlo Zinelli is the Italian brut artist who is best known and most collected outside Italy.
Carlo Zinelli. Visionary Chronicles is the second volume of "
Margivaganti" series curated by
Eva di Stefano and devoted to outsider creators and their works. A series of publications, characterized by an original layout, highlights extra-ordinary characters and their creations. In each volume a rich mix of text and images depicts an intense portrait of irregular people that have found, in the most unusual and amazing art forms, an escape from their difficult lives.
